Robert Barton Englund (born June 6, 1949) is an actor, director, stuntman and voice actor for Regular Show who is well known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series.

Early life and career

Robert Barton Englund was born on June 6, 1949 in Glendale, California, the only child of Janis (née McDonald) and C. Kent Englund. His father was an aeronautics engineer who helped develop the Lockheed U-2 airplane, while his mother was a flight instructor. His parents met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during World War II, where they both taught the Brazilian air force how to fly their new air crafts. He is of Swedish descent. Despite being known for playing Freddy Krueger, when he was 9 years old he watched a horror film at a birthday party and was terrified for months afterward. When he was nearly 13, his parents took their goddaughter Gail in after her parents passed away; he and Gail formed a close bond, considering each other brother and sister. Shortly before graduating high school, he left home after an argument with his father.

Education and Nightmare on Elm Street

Englund started taking drama courses at the age of 12 at the University of Oakland, and continued his education at several institutions: the University of California at Los Angeles, California State-Northridge, Michigan Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. In high school he won ten acting awards as a part of the teenage drama workshop, as well as being a surfer and baseball player.

He began his professional acting career in a production of Godspell in Ohio. He made his film debut in Buster and Billie. He was originally typecast as either rednecks or good-natured characters, before winning the role of Willie, a sympathetic alien invader on the miniseries V. The director of the series, Wes Craven, noticed his acting ability and cast him as Freddy Krueger in Nightmare on Elm Street. Portraying Freddy Krueger helped make him an icon in the horror movie industry and continued playing Freddy in sequels. When asked how it felt to play Freddy, Englund replied: "Playing Freddy [Krueger] was very liberating. I could be operatic. Most dramatic acting is re-acting. Freddy on the other hand has a gun-slingers swagger, a whole dance of postures and gestures that is larger than life. It was fun to use my theatre tricks on the screen." Englund dressed up as Krueger one final time at a convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Directing and voiceovers

Englund is also a director, having directed the horror film 976-EVIL, which was low budget. Englund later admitted he prefers acting over directing, stating: "Acting. Directing eats your life. Acting is a job with a start and a finish." In addition to acting and directing he has also dabbled in voiceover, reprising his role as Freddy Krueger on The Simpsons, provided the voice of the Riddler in The Batman and the Stag-Man on Regular Show in the episode "Camping Can Be Cool."

Personal life

Englund has been married three times. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Gardner, a nurse, in 1968. The two remained married before divorcing in 1986. He then married his second wife, Roxanne Rogers, an actress, who he had dated long-term, later that year. Rogers is the sister of playwright Sam Shepard. The couple divorced two years later in 1988. He then married his third wife, Nancy Ellen Booth, a set decorator, who he met on the set of his film 976-EVIL. They later married that year on October 1, 1988, and the two have remained married since. He has also released an autobiography, entitled Hollywood Monster. He is friends with fellow Regular Show voice actor Mark Hamill and actor Gary Busey. Englund's favorite film of the Nightmare on Elm Street series is New Nightmare. He resides in Laguna Beach, California with his current wife and dog.
