"Video Game Wizards" is the nineteenth episode in Season 3 (and fifty-ninth episode overall) of Regular Show. It first aired on March 26, 2012.

Synopsis[]

Mordecai and Skips enter a video game competition for the "Maximum Glove". Meanwhile, Rigby repeatedly tries to convince Mordecai to enter him in instead of Skips.

Plot[]

Mordecai and Rigby see a commercial for a video game tournament called the Game Inferno Tournament at the Ferguson Convention Center, the prize being a gaming controller called The Maximum Glove. Rigby is excited and Mordecai is apathetic, trying to dissuade Rigby from the tournament because he already picked Skips as his partner. Rigby finds out and is shattered by Mordecai's choice, Mordecai punches Rigby on the couch really hard and makes Rigby cry, but after he stops crying, he begrudgingly accepts Mordecai's invitation for him to watch them play.

The three take a road trip in Skips' Volkswagen. Throughout the trip, Rigby aggressively targets Mordecai for not picking him. Rigby even went to the extent of making a Mix-Tape with a song he recorded himself, called "Never Pick Their Friends". He also made matching shirts, one of which was obviously made for himself, but he gives it to Skips anyway. The night before the tournament, Rigby blasts Never Pick Their Friends from a boombox outside of the hotel they are all staying at, much to Mordecai's dismay.

On the first day of the tournament, Mordecai puts Rigby's name down as the alternate during registration, prompting an enraged Rigby to confront him in the middle of the center. During the quarrel, Mordecai pushes Rigby on the floor as everyone jeers. Mordecai finally admits the reason he picked Skips is due to Rigby's bad skills at video games. Shocked and feeling betrayed, Rigby angrily ends his friendship with him and storms away, hoping Mordecai have as much fun winning the glove as he did losing Rigby. Skips conveys his disappointment in Mordecai.

Mordecai and Skips win every match in the tournament up until the final match again Fred and Jimmy, but Mordecai begins to feel guilty at his behavior and realizes that his friendship with Rigby is more important than the glove. Skips purposely injures his hand so that Mordecai can convince Rigby to play. Rigby soon realizes that Mordecai was right about him being bad at video games and they begin to lose the final match. Mordecai reaffirms to Rigby that their friendship is more important than the glove when they are teleported into a dark room with a gigantic version of the Maximum Glove. The Glove Creature tells the friends that they are the first to realize the true meaning of gaming and gives them the power to defeat Fred and Jimmy.

When they are teleported back to the tournament, Mordecai and Rigby are morphed into one person. They win the game, which destroys the entire stadium, and the crowd cheers. The game referee crowns them the new Game Inferno Tournament winners and give them the Maximum Glove. Mordecai and Rigby return home to discover that the Maximum Glove doesn't even work.

  • As Rigby holds his boombox, it is similar to the way Lloyd Dobler holds his boombox as he serenades his girl with Peter Gabriel's song "In Your Eyes" in the 1989 film Say Anything.
  • Mordecai and Rigby's form when they were fused together by the power of the Maximum Glove greatly resembles Four Arm's design in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, as well as resembling Mehrunes Dragon from the Elder Scrolls franchise, and both Goro and Kintaro from the Mortal Kombat franchise. Their form also resembles Machamp, the Superpower Pokémon, from the Pokémon franchise, but with an extra head and no wrestling belt.
